In mid-October 2014 a plan was hatched for the Army endurance teams to win the Inter Services London Marathon Championships. It was agreed that the first two individuals male and female across the finish line at the Abingdon Army Marathon would be given places into the London marathon whatever time they ran. Eleina Bayne, Gaz Till (winner) Matt East all performed extremely well.

Next task was to look at the results in the Comd cross country league across the country and scan for potential. Also with over 600 runners taking part in the Army Cross Country Championships at RMA Sandhurst we had a group of athletes with great potential. It paid off, Kelly Hudson, John Walton and Stuart Henderson had strong performances.

Whispers on the grapevine were there were individuals out on the ground running well, Wayne Dashper now out of the Royal Navy and now serving with the MPGS Army. I knew him from old and knew he could run sub 2.40 for the marathon, Sam Toop, John Walton and Stuart Henderson also very good endurance runners, middle pack runners. Now we could blend the new with old. Mike Dooley, Paddy Paton, Craig Williams, John Baslington and the ace in the pack Paul Molyneux.

March saw the Inter Services Half marathon take place at Fleet on 22 March 2015. Disaster the RAF beat us hands down. Injury and military commitment saw a depleted team. However Cpl Nerys Jones and Rebecca Bowdler ran well along with Vicky Parker another three athletes for London. Now the plan is coming together.

On Sunday 26 April at 10.10, 17 Army athletes were on the start line determined to show both Services that they weren’t just there to make up the numbers. Game on.

At the half way point I received information that Molyneux is flying, no other service athlete anywhere near him. A little further back the RAF and Navy team runners are performing well. The race doesn’t start until the 20 mile point. We still have time to pull this one out the bag.

True to form Paul Molyneux crosses the line in a time of 2.21.27, new pb. Inter Services Marathon Champion, and yes the team came through in the 2nd half of the race. Race results as follows:
